COMMUNITY MIDRASHA

Community Midrasha, School for Jewish Studies for our teenagers, is a joint program of Judea Reform Congregation, Beth El Synagogue and the Chapel Hill Kehillah that provides young people in grades 8 through 12 with opportunities to explore Judaism through further study and experiences. Students from Chapel Hill, Durham, Hillsborough, Pittsboro and surrounding counties come together to participate in the formal classes and informal sessions. The program and curriculum evolves from year to year as the result of a combination of factors: on-going assessment of needs and interests of Jewish teenagers, faculty specialties and congregational volunteers’ areas of expertise, direct student input, information from schools in similar settings, and current research and publications in the various sub-fields of Jewish education.

The school’s governing body, the Community Midrasha Board, consists of the education director and the rabbis and lay representatives of the participating congregations. The school is located at Judea Reform Congregation, 1933 W. Cornwallis Road, Durham, NC 27705.

The task of Community Midrasha is to prepare its students for the roles they will play in the future as individual Jews, as members of the Jewish community, and as citizens of the larger American and world communities.
