Teachers and school children, precious jewels of our community — Midrash Rabbah, Song of Songs
Our religious school offers a warm, friendly and all- encompassing Jewish education. We aspire to provide an environment in which each child is immersed in mitzvot, life cycle events, ethics, Bible stories/history, Jewish traditions/culture and holidays through study, lively discussion, art, music and field trips. Approximately 200 students meet on Sundays for Religious School. Grades 3 through 7 meet from 9:30–11:30 a.m. and children in preschool through 2nd grade meet from 9:35am-11:35am.
Hebrew school students (grades 3-6) attend on Sundays from 11:55am-1:15pm or Tuesdays from 4:00pm-5:30pm in Durham. In order for our children to have a better understanding of Judea life and to foster connections between synagogue, school and home, all Hebrew school students are encouraged to attend services and/or Junior Congregation.

Our Hebrew program emphasizes the reading skills needed to enable each student to acquire a basic Hebrew prayer vocabulary, become comfortable with the prayers used in the services at Judea Reform Congregation, and acquire some modern Hebrew.

Our FELT Program (Families Exploring and Learning Together) is a Jewish family series created as an ongoing family-centered program that offers one or two unique Sunday sessions per grade for students and parents to learn and grow. FELT Sundays are a special time for our families—a time when they can walk together and share the path toward Jewish knowledge. Our current FELT programs include Celebrate Shabbat (preschool); Experiencing Havdalah Family Style (kindergarten); A Journey Through the Fall Holidays (1st grade); Looking Over Passover (2nd grade); "Trip" to Israel (3rd grade); Tu B’Shevat Seder/Judaism and the Environment (4th grade); Ellis Island Simulation (5th grade); Preparing to Become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah: The Tallit (6th grade); Preparing to Become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah: Understanding the Torah and Writing a Torah Commentary, and Preparing for Your Child to Become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah (Parents Only). A B'nai Mitzvah Parent/Child Q & A session and a siddur cover workshop are also offered to parents of our 6th graders.
We encourage our children to develop a love of Judaism, a positive Jewish identity and caring menschlekeit. We teach Judaism as a hands-on, participatory experience and we hope to incorporate each child’s natural curiosity into our curriculum. Our religious school is also an integral part of the Judea Reform community, providing programming for families as well as children and offering many direct opportunities for our young people to become involved with the religious, social and educational life of the community. In this way, we encourage our children to think of Judaism as both a deeply personal and vitally communal way of life.
For more information about Judea Reform’s religious school, please contact Education Director Stacy Lubov at 489-7062 or slubov@judeareform.org and set up a time to chat!
