The Torah begins and ends with acts of tzedakah, caring and loving kindness . -- Talmud: Sotah 14a

The giving of tzedakah at the new year is an important mitzvah that many people observe. In order to make a greater impact for worthwhile organizations, we have our own custom -- the Tzedakah Mutual Fund. Each year, we ask congregants for contributions and distribute them to organizations selected by our Social Action Committee. This allows these organizations to receive a substantial gift!

For 5772, the Social Action Committee has selected Habitat for Humanity as the recipient organization of this year's Tzedakah Mutual Fund. Judea Reform Congregation will be building a Habitat for Humanity House in the spring of 2012 with the support of funds given now.

Holiday Details

As the High Holidays approach, our Judea Reform community will join with Jews around the world to begin a time of introspection and meaningful reflection. Our leadership and staff continue to work especially hard to ensure an abundance of opportunities for the entire congregation in our treasured sacred space throughout the fall holidays. This page provides detailed information regarding security, tickets, and service times. We ask for your patience and understanding as we, once again, choreograph the flow of worshippers (and their vehicles) and as we implement security procedures for the safety of all.

Parking

Information about parking will be mailed to members and given to guests upon reservation of tickets.

Ticket Policy

This year, our High Holiday tickets will be nametags. We hope that you’ll find this change a pleasant departure from our old custom, as new and old friends greet you by name in our hallways. Please remember to wear your nametag to all services.

High Holiday nametags for members in good standing (those whose past fiscal year’s financial obligations to Judea Reform Congregation have been paid in full or who have made arrangements for their payment, and whose pledge form for 2010-2011 has been received) are provided by mail. Please remember to wear your nametags to all services.

Every adult must present his/her admission nametag for entry. We ask that all non-members of Judea Reform who would like to worship with us make arrangements in advance by visiting or phoning our office.

Purchasing Tickets

Additional nametags for services may be purchased at the synagogue during regular office hours. There are significant costs associated with security, rentals, printing, prayer books, break fast, etc., and it is expected that those who attend services share the expense. Members make their contributions directly through their synagogue support. Others are asked to contribute through nametag purchases as follows:

· Non-member: $200 per adult. You can purchase tickets online here.

· Out of town relative of a member: no charge

· Non-affiliated local relative of a member: $100 per adult

· College students (with ID): no charge

· Individuals studying for conversion or other non-Jewish guests: no charge.

Nametags will be held for guests at the door.  If you wish to pick up your nametag in advance, please do so at least one business day before the holiday.

At this time of year we want to open our doors and encourage non-members to experience the benefits of affiliating with Judea Reform Congregation. No one will be denied admission to High Holiday services because of a genuine inability to pay the suggested contribution.

Member Nametags

One nametag per adult member of the congregation is provided. Nametags are not required for dependent children under the age of 23. All adult children of congregants who are age 23 and older and are no longer students must have their own nametag.

College Students

College students will be required to present a current student ID at the door.

Obtaining Guest Nametags

Immediate out-of-town family of our members will be admitted without charge, but they must have a guest nametag. Please obtain them from the office in advance. Immediate family members that live locally and are unaffiliated will be required to purchase nametags in advance.

Lost/Forgotten Tickets

Members who have forgotten their nametags will be required to register at the door, present a valid photo ID, and will then be permitted to enter.

Non-members without Tickets

Non-members without nametags must present a valid photo ID and have carried items checked by security. All non-members without nametags will be required to wait outside the synagogue until five minutes before services begin. They will then be invited into the facility to secure seats and prayer books based on availability. This procedure is in effect for every service.

Security

Once again, we will have Durham County police officers assisting with parking before the services and monitoring our building – both inside and outside – during services.

No backpacks or bags will be permitted inside the building (our annual food drive will be held outside near the Mirkaz Limud / Education Building).

Our nametag process is an integral part of security for our High Holy Days services. Simply put, we need to know who is entering our building in order to maintain the safety of our members and guests. Therefore, please remember to bring your nametag(s) with you to services. Individuals without nametags will be asked to provide proof of identification.

Food Drive

It is our tradition to hold a food drive during the High Holy Days to benefit those in need in Durham and Chapel Hill. Food collected is given to the Interfaith Council for Social Service in Chapel Hill and Urban Ministries in Durham. Please see the September High Holidays brochure for more information about our annual food drive.
