A Message from Interim Director of Education Elisa Koppel

June, 29th, 2021

Shalom JRC,

I'm so excited to be joining your community as your Interim Education Director.  I look forward to meeting all of you, learning from your community, and partnering towards a year of Jewish learning, exploration, and experience for our school.

This past year or so has been anything but normal and there is so much opportunity to create vibrant Jewish living for our school community as we take steps towards joining together in person in the fall--in a way that takes the ever changing needs of our students to feel as safe as possible: physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

In the coming weeks, I anticipate being very busy learning everything I can about the community and especially the school--and to plan for the coming year.  I would love to meet each of you and all of you and to hear your ideas about Jewish education at JRC.

And I want to especially note that the invitation to talk to me about your ideas is open to the young people in our community. I look forward to learning with and learning from our students.

I come to this position after many years in Jewish communal life, and especially Jewish education, both formal and informal.  Most recently, I was the Director of Lifelong Learning at Congregation Beth Emeth in Wilmington, DE. You can learn more about me in my bio--and you can learn the most by meeting me in person.

While I won't be physically moving to Durham until August, I do plan on visiting at least once in person before then -- and (as we all know at this point), relationships really can be formed and community built on zoom.  I look forward to getting to know you--as individuals and as a community.

We have an exciting year ahead of us.  I can't wait for our community to step towards it together.

Rabbi Elisa F. Koppel
