Learning and Informed Discussion on Prospects for Peace in Israel and Palestine

An important opportunity for JRC members to learn and engage in informed dialogue on prospects for peace in Israel and Palestine will be offered on Sunday morning, November 18, from 9:45am to 11:45am in the Levin Social Hall.

  • 9:45am Bagel & Coffee Nosh
  • 10:15am Program

Hosted and moderated by Rabbi Franken as a follow-up to his Yom Kippur sermon, the event will feature Duke Professor and JRC congregant Bruce Jentleson speaking on the topic “Why No Israeli-Palestinian Peace? An Insider's Perspective on the Issues,” followed by facilitated discussion.

Bruce Jentleson is Professor of Public Policy and Political Science at Duke University and former Director of the Terry Sanford Institute (now the Sanford School) of Public Policy. He has served as a State Department Middle East policy advisor and negotiator during the Oslo Peace Process, as an advisor to Vice President Al Gore in his 2000 presidential campaign, and in the Obama Administration, as well as more informally in various roles with Israelis of wide-ranging perspectives, Palestinians and other Arabs.  He has also been a member of numerous bipartisan U.S. commissions and task forces concerned with the Middle East. The most recent of his many books  is The Peacemakers: Leadership Lessons from 20th Century Statesmanship. Dr. Jentleson's first-hand experience and analysis of key issues in the region will provide a context for thoughtful exchange of views by congregants of all persuasions.

Structured discussion, maintaining relevant, respectful and concise interaction, will focus on issues suggested by Dr. Jentleson's talk. This program, planned in consultation with the Israel Discourse Advisory Committee, is offered to further knowledgeable dialogue on the themes addressed in Rabbi Franken's Yom Kippur comments and other Israel-related events taking place in the congregation and community this year.

Please RSVP below for this event, for which all JRC members are welcome. Bagel & coffee nosh will be provided.
