40th Annual Meals on Wheels Christmas Dinner

For the past 39 years, congregants and friends of Judea Reform Congregation have gathered to prepare and deliver a special Christmas meal for Meals on Wheels of Durham.

Our 40th Year

Since 1980, Judea Reform congregants have gathered turkeys, cans of green beans and cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and many other tasty food items.  We’ve cooked many dishes at home, brought items to Judea Reform’s kitchen, and worked shoulder to shoulder on assembly lines to prepare and pack delicious meals, all while catching up with family and friends. Then pairs of our volunteer drivers with route maps in hand, promptly delivered these fresh and hot turkey dinners to our most vulnerable Durham community members, most clients of MOWD are low-income seniors who are housebound, disabled, socially isolated and without the means to provide a cheerful holiday dinner for themselves. Judea congregants often found  that we have received substantially more than we gave in this act of direct service. For the past 39 years, and to the nearly 450 clients of Meals on Wheels we served in 2019 , we have met love with love!

2020 and COVID Precautions

In this pandemic year, for the safety of our congregants and all meal recipients, we have had to change how we fulfill this annual mitzvah.  Since we cannot be in person to cook, prepare, and assemble meals ourselves, we have launched a dedicated fundraising drive to provide resources for Meals on Wheels Durham (MOWD), who will work with a restaurant to cater this holiday dinner for MOWD clients. Meals on Wheels Durham will then organize the delivery of the meals to their clients in our name.  Judea Reform will provide a caring note to the recipient expressing love and friendship from our congregation. In this way, we will continue to do all we can to support our food insecure neighbors, as the need remains great.

Our 2020 goal

Judea Reform’s goal for this fundraiser is $8,100.  The average cost for MOWD to coordinate the preparation and packaging of one meal is close to $18.  We are hoping to fund 450 meals on Christmas Day.

(Note: you must make your financial contribution through the Meals on Wheel Durham website.)

Volunteers are still needed for drivers!

Do you wish to volunteer to drive?  Meals on Wheels is always looking for drivers! If you are able during this pandemic to deliver meals on Christmas Day (with COVID safety protocols in place), please volunteer at www.mowdurham.org/volunteer or contact Annette Read annette@mowdurham.org.

Soon we can gather again in friendship to prepare special meals for those in need.  Until that day, please consider making a donation to Meals on Wheels so that we can continue to spread joy and fulfill one of the ultimate Jewish mitzvahs.

Virtually together!
