Join us for a community-wide, multigenerational discussion of "On Juneteenth" by Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Annette Gordon-Reed. With warmth, insight, and honesty, Gordon-Reed blends personal memoir and deep historical knowledge to explore the meaning and legacy of Juneteenth—America’s second Independence Day.
Whether you’re a teen learning about Juneteenth for the first time or a longtime justice-seeker, this book will challenge what you thought you knew and invite you to see our shared history through a new lens.
Moderated discussions will feature small breakout groups and guiding questions that connect the book’s themes to Jewish values of freedom, memory, and justice.
All are welcome. No prior knowledge needed—just an open mind and a willingness to learn together.
Everyone is welcome to join this read-along and discussion! Congregants are encouraged to purchase the book locally at either Letters Bookshop (116 W. Main St. Durham) or Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill. Grab your copy now, read it before June 18th, and join us to discuss! Register below if you plan to attend.
