Creating a Life in A New World

Paintings by Cornelio Campos

Join us for an Opening Reception with Mr. Campos on Friday, April 20 at 8:45 pm following 7:30 pm Shabbat Services. All are welcome.

Cornelio Campos is a self-taught Mexican-American artist based in Durham, N.C. Mr. Campos immigrated to the United States from Mexico as a teenager—a journey and process that now influence many of his paintings. Vibrant colors, iconic American symbols, and intricate geometric patterns define Mr. Campos’s work. Through his paintings, he illustrates some of the harsh realities of immigrating to America that immigrants often overlook. Moreover, Mr. Campos’s paintings exemplify techniques that he has learned through observation, and often defy traditional color schemes. His paintings contain therapeutic, controversial, and enlightening elements that make them both unique and unforgettable.

Mr. Campos’s art has been exhibited in a host of local settings, including the University of North Carolina’s FedEx Global Education Center, Duke University’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Durham's Pleiades Gallery, and the Mexican Consulate in Raleigh. One of his pieces hangs on permanent display in UNC’s Campus Y; a large mural that he helped paint—created in collaboration with “The U.S./Mexico Border” class at Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies—graces the side of Torero’s Mexican Restaurant at West Main and Duke Streets in Durham.

The exhibit will be on display in Judea Reform Congregation's Rosenzweig Gallery until late August 2018.
