7:30 PM - 9:00 PMSanctuaryViolins of Hope with Sonam & the Mallarmé Chamber Players
Mallarmé Chamber Players and SONAM, conducted by Allan Friedman, are collaborating to present Violins of Hope, a concert based on an eponymous book by UNC-Charlotte music historian James Grymes. Violins of Hope tells the remarkable stories of violins played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust, and of Amnon Weinstein, the renowned Israeli violin maker dedicated to bringing these inspirational instruments back to life.
The concert is part of JRC’s Shir Simcha Concert Series and is scheduled to take place on Kristallnacht, or the Night of Broken Glass. It will include a new work by Duke graduate and composer David Kirkland Garner, a performance of “Verklarte Nacht” by Arnold Schoenberg, string music of holocaust composers Hans Krása and Gideon Klein, and excerpts from a Cantata by Judea Reform Music Director Allan Friedman.
