Biblical Barbecue with Rabbinic Intern Sam Weiss
This lunch and learn series will explore a central but oft overlooked feature of ancient Judaism: animal sacrifice. The sacrificial system figures prominently in Jewish law and lore, from the Torah to the Talmud and beyond. And yet, we rarely think of blood, guts, or barbecue when we think of Jewish practice. Over the course of three sessions, we will consider the nature of religious sacrifice in the minds of ancient, medieval, and early modern thinkers, and think deeply about its surprising role in contemporary Jewish life. Along the way, we are sure to address the finer points of barbecue, grilling, and other manners of outdoor cookery. Feel free to join for as many or as few classes as they like. All three sessions are B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Barbecue) and, of course, pescatarians, vegetarians, and vegans are most welcome to join. contact Jodi Lampley at jlampley@judeareform.org or 919-489-7062 ext. 233 to sign up.
