The genre of comedy has been largely overlooked within Talmudic literature until recent years, constituting a void in scholarship that one scholar refers to as a “deplorable hole in Jewish studies. In this class, we will fill that void, approaching various texts from the Babylonian Talmud through the lens of comic theory. Together we will "listen for laughter," and, by sensing their humor, gain insight into the mindset of the Talmudic sages.
